They date back centuries; they are ridiculous and are only good as laughing material. In 1965 UK decided to update its legal system and abolished more than 2,000 strange laws. It seems that lawmakers overlooked a few of them and as a result they are still on force. Read some of them to make sure you do not find yourself offending others.

As you’ll probably remember from your childhood, Wimbledon Common is home to the loveable Wombles (who also lived in Hyde Park for a brief period). We’ve never actually seen a Womble, but this may be more to the massive size of these conjoined commons than their fictitious nature. If you want to get active, this is the best place in the whole of London to do so. An extensive network of bridleways that link down to Richmond Park are great for horse or bike riding. Golf is also on offer, as is the opportunity to enjoy an endless string of sports of your own creation.

Wimbledon Common also spreads down to the edge of the pricey but attractive Wimbledon Village. Set on the hill above the rest of Wimbledon, this rather snooty enclave does boast some delicious pubs and cafes where you can stop for a break any time of the year.

Other than these two, another (unconnected) common worth bearing in mind is Clapham Common. While it has a rather salubrious night-time reputation, it is a busy and lively place during the day, in the heart of the student-friendly area of Clapham.
