The British MuseumThe British Museum is London’s pre-eminent cultural and historical museum. It’s worth a visit for the wonderful main entrance hall itself – a massive white, circular atrium with an airy glass ceiling that lets clear light wash in over you. At the centre of this is the reading room, with its collection of intriguing books, and above this are galleries used for special exhibitions and displays.

The collections within the museum itself are some of the most impressive and significant anywhere in the world. Special attractions come from far and wide to fill the museum’s halls and it’s always worthwhile keeping an eye on what’s on and forthcoming in the year’s timetable. Inside the atrium as well, practical displays and exhibits celebrate diverse cultures and skills. And in the permanent collections you can find the famous (if somewhat controversial) Elgin marbles. Originally housed atop the Parthenon in Ancient Athens, they are a stunning sight and an absolute must-see for your time in London.
