St. Paul’s Cathedral PDF Print E-mail

st-pauls-cathedral.jpgFamously designed by Sir Christopher Wren, the dome of St. Paul’s, which is located on Ludgate Hill in the heart of London, is an iconic part of the city’s famous skyline. Inside, the cathedral is just as magnificent, with the underside of the dome (which is actually a separate construction to the outer copper one) imposing itself on the building below.

The cathedral currently standing at the site is actually the fifth St. Paul’s to have been built. The previous one was destroyed by the great fire of 1666 and it’s successor, the one that we have today, was completed in 1708. It has survived a number of incidents over the years, including being bombed in WWII. One bomb that did score a direct hit was, fortunately, on a time delay fuse. Emergency teams managed to reach it before it detonated and remove it to a safe location. Had it exploded in the cathedral, St. Paul’s would certainly have been reduced to a pile of rubble.
